I guess that I am using a different screen on my xl....my bar is always blue and goes from 0 to 60 and again at 60mph on the highway, my blue line sometimes reads about 50 ..... this tells me that I am using both electric and gas because engine mph should only be about 34....
Not sure what you are referring to exactly. Did you mean 34 mpG not mpH?
If so you mean the trip odometer showing instant gas mileage.
But on that screen not sure what the 0-60 is talking about.

Picture always helpful!

From the manual though.

EV COACH - HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (HEV)

EV coach can help you get the most out of your vehicle's electric driving capabilities.
Note: EV coach is a selectable screen. See Customizing the Instrument Cluster Display - Vehicles With: 6.5 Inch Screen.
When you are accelerating or maintaining speed you see a blue or white solid bar indicating vehicle power. You may also see a blue rectangular box which shows the power level at which the engine turns on.
  • When the power level is within the box, the color of the bar is blue. This means you are in electric operation and the engine is off.
  • When the power level is outside of the box, the color of the bar is white. This means you are in hybrid operation with a combination of the electric motor and the engine providing vehicle power.
When you are decelerating with either your foot off the accelerator pedal or on the brake pedal, a green or white solid bar displays indicating the power being used to slow down your vehicle. You may also see a green rectangular box which shows the amount of power that can be recaptured by the regenerative braking system and returned to the high voltage battery.
  • When the power level is within the box, the color of the bar is green. This means that the regenerative braking system is being used to efficiently slow your vehicle down and return the maximum percentage of energy to the high voltage battery.
  • When the power level is outside of the box, the color of the bar is white. This means both the regenerative braking system and conventional braking system are being used.

I don't have any of these white lines....I guess that I will have to take a picture when driving....it Is a solid blue horizontal line that shows MPG ( 0 to 60 ) when highway driving it is always between 30 and 60 .... when I slow down the blue line goes away and it changes saying ELECTRIC....

That is in fact the definition of a series hybrid. Diesel electric locomotives work the same way and are in fact the ur-hybrid. We just didn't call them that when they were invented.

Another way of putting it:
in a series hybrid, if you take the electrics (battery, motor) out, you would have to replace them with something (like a mechanical transmission) to make the car move.
But in a parallel hybrid, if you take out the electric motor and battery, the car can still go without adding anything back, just less efficiently.
These definitions have "evolved" over the years. To me, and to a whole bunch of people, "hybrid" means a combination of two methods of propulsion. An EV with a gas or diesel generator is not a hybrid. The engine just substitutes for the grid power.

I guess I am a purist.

The Honda Insight pictured above in #17 is a true series hybrid in the purest sense.

Thanks....you made it very simple...so if i understand you correctly, the vehicle is always propelled electrically and the engine is just recharging the drive batteries....

Only in a very few vehicles.
Not the Maverick.

Maverick is almost always gas & electric power at the same time going to the wheels.

At slow speeds in a parking lot, sometimes Electric only.

At steady speeds on the highway, sometimes gasoline power only is turning the wheels.
