AMC Eagle Sundancer! One of these changed hands recently for not too much cash. Might find one with a T5 manual. If not a T5 or AX-15 is a easy swap. The AMC 258 is peppy with a weber and a cam. Even better a 4.0 head, or a turbo. Or a 4.0 with a ported head, cam, compression, 258 crank, and a turbo is worth 600hp atleast. Freakride suspension makes IFS upgrades and
parts to tame the rear axle. Full time 4 wheel drive, and better overall ground clearance than the Maverick. You'd have alot of fun, turn almost every head, and be unique.

Had a pair of mid-70s MG Midgets. Fun cars, but constant maintenance if driving daily. Plus, English cars just aren’t built to handle the long-distances that Americans drive on road trips.

The only thing that broke on my 1995 Miata was a clutch slave cylinder for $17.00 in 132,000 miles. A newer Miata with 2000 engine, 6 speed and push button hard top (about 2010 model) would be my choice for fun reliable car.

This is a wonderful series of posts for taking a look at something fun. I have had any number of cars that fall in this category. For sheer unadulterated brute speed my 1971 Boss 351 Mustang (Southeast Asia PX buy) picked up August 13, 1971 the day after I got back in the states, takes the cake. Loud, fast, deep growl and plenty of grunt it had it all. Paid 3950 for it, sold it during the 73 gas crisis. Had an 87 Porsche 911 with a chip and exhaust on it that had a certain way about it. It was fast, loud and sophisticated, but really expensive to maintain. My wife's 95 Mercedes 500SL was deceptively fast and almost too comfortable driving FAST, great for touring. It could get you in trouble before you realized. Although my recent favorite would be my 2002 Boxster. Beautiful blue with tan leather interior. Handled like a dream, just a sweet fun ride. Sold it when I lost my left eye; afraid I would merge onto the highway and end up under a semi. Sold it too fast a knee jerk reaction, should have waited, oh well. All of them fit the "fun" category and would work well. Depending on what I was going for, probably would say the 911 or the Boxster as first choice, but the Boss 351 was a beast! Now looking forward to my Maverick to be my new fun car.

Either of these ponies will provide impressive acceleration.

Thing to keep in mind is how much of a pain it is to live with an old car. They require a lot of work to keep running right. Don't drive nearly as well as modern cars and are terrible should you have an accident in them. I've owned over 50 cars in my life and had always had muscle cars of some sort up until the last 10 years or so.

Anything that’s actually so much “fun” you look forward to driving it is the right car for you. I’m north of 70 and have nearly always had a sports car of some sort. MGB, Midget, Fiat 1500, Porsche, AH, Corvette, etc. All were older and “relatively inexpensive.” Enjoyed them all but tended to sell and replace when something more interesting came along. About 14 years ago, bought a 1990 (actually built in early 1989) Miata NA. I’ve had a couple of other fun cars since then in addition to the Miata but I just can’t even think about letting it go. Everything about it is a blast to own for me. Easy to work on, plentiful parts, nothing drives better on a crooked secondary road, great owners community, etc. Have a friend feels same way about Wranglers and others that enjoy 60’s and 70’s muscle cars.
Point is …get a vehicle that speaks to you, not necessarily what others may think is cool.
P/S: The Maverick is proving to be a bit of a fun car in itself!

Still my all time favorite toy. 1969 Austin Healey 3000 Mark III. (except for the Lucas electronics; also known as "Prince of Darkness!") 35 years after selling it I tracked it down but the new owner says he will never sell it.) 😥

Holy crap! What an amazing vehicle. New in 1969, $3,300...used in good shape today $90K to $105K.

Actually owned an Eagle back in the day but never knew this version existed! Really unique!
