I would assume that at -some- point a PHEV Maverick is in the cards.
Yes, within 1-2 years. The hardware is already there. The floor pan in the Maverick is already designed for it all to bolt in. Offering it will be a necessity within a few years to start meeting the Clean Air guidelines in California and it's following states. The question remains will they be offering it elsewhere or only in those States at first. Also there's a poison pill, you put a 700 or 800 lb battery in the truck that comes right off of the payload. So it may not be able to haul as much as people might hope for. They will still sell every single one of them they build and it will cost.

Those debating the California EV mandate should understand that it is not BEV only. It does allow PHEV as an acceptable alternative. When everyone tries to say a California is banning gas engines they are wrong. What they are doing is only allowing gas engines with a plug-in option. The media coverage of this has been terrible so it’s not surprising that no one understands this.

You could probably get by with less than 700-800 pounds (on a PHEV). IIRC the Fusion Energi battery was under 300 pounds. 400-500 while not great would put the body payload to around 1500 pounds.

You could probably get by with less than 700-800 pounds (on a PHEV). IIRC the Fusion Energi battery was under 300 pounds. 400-500 while not great would put the body payload to around 1500 pounds.

Edit: (Clarified pounds of PHEV)
The current Ford Escape PHEV is a 336 pounds heavier than the HEV which is about 150 pounds more than the standard gas models. It has an EV range of about 37 miles. So yes, PHEV does not have to have a 700-800 pound battery to be on the market now. Though even if it were just the 336 pound penalty the Escape sees if Ford just opted for the same hardware on a Maverick, it would hit payload rating by a nearly identical amount of 336 pounds.

If a Maverick PHEV were calibrated to achieve ZEV status under the California Clean Cars II regulation it would need to have a minimum 50 mile EV range which would necessitate a larger and heavier battery. 700-800 pounds? Maybe not but definitely heavier than the current PHEV system.

The fact I can observe first hand is that the grid in many parts of the country, for the majority of the summer, can not handle the current load. Utility companies pay consumers and commercial customers handsomely to load shed during peak hours and its only getting worse. Adding hundreds of thousands of EVs charging is simply not sustainable without adding significant power generation capacity or dystopian government oversight of the entire charging infrstructure.

Ford typically does a mid cycle refresh after 2-4 years. I would be surprised if they go 5 model years without a refresh. That far out would be the first major changes. Refresh might include things like different interior fabrics, Sync introduction, etc.
5 year redesign not refresh. Take a look at the mustang for example redesigned every 5.

Most car batteries are getting away from the use of cobalt so there is that....

Why is the Mach E only "party trick cool"? What makes it less worth $70k than an F150? Granted you can't drive your Mach E outside of the city because of charging infrastructure but Tesla can go all over the US and that network will soon be open to all EVs.

I've had mine for about 6 months now (and 7,500 miles). I live in Columbus, OH and have had the Model 3 in Illinois (Chicago), Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Not sure what you consider long distance travel to be but I think the longest trip I've taken the Model 3 on is to my property in Boone, NC. It's about 430 miles driveway to driveway. This trip usually takes me about 7 hours to complete give or take 15 minutes.

You're correct that you put in your destination and the Tesla software will route you accordingly and plan your stops at Superchargers. Only 1 time has it really bungled the decision and had me pass a SC in Charleston, WV and told me to head to Chilicothe, OH to charge up and about 3 miles past the SC changed its mind and told me I needed to go back to Charleston or I wouldn't make it Chilicothe. It was super frustrating but really added about 20 extra minutes and again, has only happened 1 time.

Using the Boone trip as an example - for the last 15 years I have driven 33S in Ohio to 77S in WV and take that to 81S in Wytheville, VA.

I can't do that anymore. I now have to take 23S into WV and 64S over to 77S. It doesn't add any additional time or mileage (it's like a square if you will with two routes) but I prefer going down 33S and making a stop in Ravenswood, WV for some Tudor's Biscuit World.

For the charging itself - I've come to realize the best part about a Tesla (for traveling) is the Supercharger network.
  • It sounds small - but every single supercharger and more specifically every charger has always worked. This is not the case with Electrify America
  • Tesla will try and route and point you to the SCs that charge the fastest. My model 3 can charge up to 250kw but I generally see charge speeds between 90kw and 150kw. I did get 250kw in Chicago and that was awesome
  • The Tesla software will only have you charge up for as much as you need to get to your destination or next supercharger stop. I generally give it an extra 3-5 minutes of charging once the car tells me I am ready just to be sure
  • I have never spent more than 30 minutes at a Supercharger. Time is generally between 15-25 minutes
  • Most superchargers are located at Sheetz, Meijers, or Holiday Inns. They aren't all right off the freeway, but they are generally within about 2 miles from any exit.
  • I usually plug in - clean off my windows, find a place to pee, grab a beverage and before that is over I usually get a notification the vehicle is done charging.

So for Boone - it makes me take a different route than I'd prefer but doesn't add time or mileage based on the route.

I have to stop twice. I can stop in either Chilicothe, OH/Portsmouth, OH/Charleston, WV and then again in Wytheville, VA. Total charge time for the trip is 35-40 minutes.

When traveling with my kids (8,6,4) any stop I make is a 15-20 minute stop. So it truly does not add time to my trips with family.

Riding solo - my stops are of the 3-5 minute NASCAR pit stop variety. So it does add significant time if I am riding solo. I have to plan that extra (window washing, beverage finding, peeing) time waste.

Last note - I arrive in Boone with about 25-30% battery life. Believe it or not, Boone, NC has superchargers! Unfortunately like most things in the south, they operate much slower (60kw) but it is comforting to know they exist if I can't get a full charge off of 240v at the property (should never be an issue).

TL DR - Supercharger network is great. Charges take between 15-30 minutes. Charging time is between 30-40 minutes on a 430 mile road trip. Will reach destination with about a 25-30% charge.

Columbus to Boone in ICE vehicle no family - 6 hrs 45 minutes

Columbus to Boone in Tesla Model 3 w/ no family - 7 hours 15 minutes

I would bet that we don't see a PHEV for 2023. Also, not every vehicle gets completely redesigned after their 6 or 7 year cycle. Many get a heavy refresh which is what I said. I seriously doubt Ford is going to put serious development money into the Maverick which is meant as an entry level vehicle to eventually sell more profitable vehicles. It already says it's staying on the C2 platform, you'll get some refreshed bodywork, a refreshed interior, some new options, probably a PHEV sometime between 2024 and then but the bones of it will most likely be exactly what it is today. Toyota is probably looking at a MY24 or 25 intro at the earliest, they are most likely not going to follow Ford's 3 year development process and even if they did that puts them at a 2024 release at the earliest. I'd say 2025 until we see a Toyota competitor.
There is a mule running around (pictures on here) of a PHEV AWD, and since the Maverick is based on the Escape and the Escape already had PHEV, it's logical that the Maverick will get it too.

BTW, which modern Ford has not had a refresh or new design in at least 4 years?

My neighbor travels between Phoenix and Long Beach weekly in his Long Range Model 3. There are many charging stations between the two cities, He also hydrates himself, and needs to pee, so he leaves his house and stops in quartzside, az and there is a supercharger. He uses the facility and gets some beef jerky (there is an amazing shop that sells it there) which takes about 20 minutes (including walking time) then stops in Indio, gets a date shake (it's a must) another 20-minute charge, and makes it into Long Beach. He said it takes him roughly 6.5 hours.

I've seen the mule. Yes, their engineers have alluded that a PHEV version is in the works but it's not as simple as slapping a powertrain from another model into the maverick and sending it. There are so many tests involved, reliability, integration, crash testing and so on and so on. I stand by my guess that it would be 2024 at the earliest. They can't even build enough hybrids for MY23 due to constraints and people think they're going to release a PHEV version mid year? Laughable

That tracks with my experience in my Model 3 Long Range.

To add what I put above. I pay $0.16/kwh and have a Wall Connector in my garage. I average between 190-250 watts per mile or roughly 4-5 miles per kw - which would mean I pay roughly $0.03-$0.04 per mile.

With gas at $3.50 per gallon (I know, I know it could be way higher) that means I'm getting the equivalent of 90-115mpg in the Model 3 when charging at home.

I pay $0.42 per kw at the Superchargers which is 2.625x more expensive.

Divide 90-110 by 2.625 and you get a Supercharger equivalent of 34.25 - 44.5mpg @ $3.50 per gallon.

Lots of folks ask why I am still in the market for and want a maverick hybrid so bad. All things considered - it is just about as efficient as my Model 3 LR when using superchargers and gas is $3.50 or less.

^^^ This is why I bought a Hybrid Mav and not a Lightning. The Mav will take me more places, with less trouble, for about the same cost per mile, with much lower base price.

Bob, I believe it's supposed to be a takeoff on the Mustang, hence the "Mach" reference.

From Wikipedia:
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a battery electric compact crossover SUV produced by Ford. The vehicle was introduced on November 17, 2019, and went on sale in December 2020 as a 2021 model.
