I ordered XLT hybrid 9/16/2022 at Santa Margarita Ford, a small local dealership where I live at Rancho Santa Margarita, orange county. If my order gets cancelled should I take my chances next time ordering at big named ford dealerships like Auto nation ford, Tuttle-click ford, Norm reeves ford and from ford dealerships that are located from a big auto mall?
Santa Margarita ford has like 30 white maverick hybrid in their car lot but it all belongs to O’ reilly auto parts. It’s been there for months already or maybe every month there are a bunch getting delivered. I wonder if this affects the allocation.

This is going to be a tough call but one thing to ask Santa Margarita Ford is whether they will give your "carryover" order a higher priority than new orders next year.

Have you checked with Ford Marketing (1 800 334 4375) on your order status?

Ask that your order is directly tied to an existing allocation. Doesn't matter the size of the dealership, only allocations count. No allocation, no truck.

I have done both so at least have an anadotal perspective. First order way back on Oct 1, 2021 was with a small-town dealership. I think they only got 5 Mavericks (and only 1 of those a Hybrid) out of 12 that were ordered. Went with them since they gave me the best deal (which the GM later claimed was a "mistake by the sales agent that no longer works here"). At least one other member here got screwed by them (they refused to honor the deal). Being that they were the only Ford dealer within 50 miles, they really did not care. They ultimately told me "If we knew Mavericks were going to be such a PITA, we would have never taken any order for them. We prefer to sell F150s. Fell free to take your next order somewhere else.". So I did.

For my '23 order I went with a large dealer that was willing to give me a Priority 10. Did LOTS of research before placing the order to make sure they would not screw me (and made sure to get a dual-signed Buyers Order as well). Really never expected to get my XL Hybrid built but last week got the Ford e-mail giving me a July 31 build date. Never got a clear answer on how many orders they had but I think it was in the range of 400-500 (one agent did say that had over 150 '22 orders that never got built).

Both dealers are non-communicative. I think I have gone through 3 different sales agents at the large dealer since they all tend to quit after 3 or 4 months (such is the case for many car dealerships these days).

When looking for a dealer, I would say the order of priority is:
1) Find a dealership with good reviews that is happy to give you a dual-signed buyers order and is not going to charge you for useless stuff
2) They will give you their lowest priority code (since you previously had an order) while brand new orders from people that that have never had an order are given higher priority (15 or 19). This will likely help your chances at least a little.
3) Place the order on day 1 (supposedly, identical orders with the same priority go by time stamp)
4) If you can find a dealer that will disclose their allocation vs orders, that is a bonus (but don't hold your breath. Almost none will disclose this.)

Ultimately, big vs small has little bearing. It all comes down to their allocation. However, there are a few benefits to the big dealers: they likely have a better relationship with the Regional Ford Inventory Specialist (since they deal with them more ofter) and have more experience placing orders (assuming you have a sales agent that has been there at least a year).

Honestly, order from both and pick up the one that comes in first. The ordering system is not FIFO by any means, and customers get screwed over due to allocations which is something not readily apparent to customers when they purchase. There is no penalty from Ford for hedging your bets by ordering multiple and picking up the first one that comes in. And hell, you can do whatever you want with your second order if it does get built and delivered to you, like resale, or sell to a family member at cost.

Sums is up pretty well. It's not necessarily how big or how small the dealership is, it's based on allocations the dealer gets from ford. Allocations is King.

The OP may want to consider different dealers sales volume of the vehicle's that the Mavericks allocations are based on to help determine where they should place their new MY24 order if the current MY23 never gets built. Granted you would think the current dealer would be willing to give the OP's new MY24 order a higher priority where as a different probably wouldn't (just an assumption).

From what i've read/understood the maverick's yearly dealer allocation forumla is based on the dealers historical sales of the vehicles below:

28% on Escape Sales
28% on Ranger Sales
14% on Bronco Sport Sales
30% on Maverick Sales

So it's my understanding a dealership with a high volume of sales on those vehicles would get more allocations for the maverick no matter the size of the dealership. I could be wrong but that's what I understand. Good Luck to the OP and all others still waiting.

I maintain the list of good dealerships for MTC. Like you, I am in Orange County CA.

I don't have any good or warning reports for Santa Margarita Ford yet. Thus, I cannot say whether or not you should be concerned. If it was me, I would stay with them if the salesperson is up to speed with everything going on, has been keeping you updated (or taking your calls), and is receiving a good supply of Mavericks. My experiences with Santa Margarita Ford prior to the pandemic were good.

Stay away from Autonation Ford of Tustin...

We can all venture guesses at why you have not been scheduled yet. If they are doing their best and they haven't taken more orders than Ford is allocating to them, I would stay with them for the 2024 model year if you don't get yours in the 2023 model year.

FYI, fleet sales are separate from retail; one does not affect the other when it comes to allocation. My experience has almost always been that the larger dealers get more allocation, smaller dealers get less. When I was selling online, I would often hear from folks that tried to order from their small, hometown dealer, but were "strung along" because the little guy didn't have allocation. My policy with all of these folks was simple: I'll order what you want, and if my order gets scheduled before your local dealer's, you can go ahead and buy from me. As we didn't require a deposit on ANY order, you could still wait and see if Local Guy could get it scheduled. If you decided to go with him, we would put your order into our regular inventory. Sold a couple hundred F-Series this way, and I don't ever recall having to eat the order.
