First off, sorry, I neglected to take any pictures. I was changing my oil today on my 24 EB FX4 and decided to go ahead and do an intial drain and fill on the PTU while I had the skid plate off. I already had the fluids on hand and I figured at 6800 miles I'd go ahead and get any break-in contaminants out.

The oil was filthy and under filled from the factory. The oil was dirty enough I couldn't shine my flashlight through it. Some fine metal shavings sludge was accumulated on the magnetic drain plug. I drained 11oz of oil out and put 17oz back in, so roughly 35% under filled. I'll be doing the RDU soon, since I'd bet it's probably in a similar condition, probably next weekend. I will update this thread when done.

So there you have it. I'd advise doing your first oil changes sooner rather than later to get the break-in contaminants out and get the proper amount of clean oil in.

Update 5/24/25: I've since changed the RDU. Oil was as dark as the PTU with similar amount fine shavings on the drain plug, but unlike the PTU it was properly filled. 20oz drained, about 21oz back in.

At 35k I had the trans, ptu and rdu fluids changed. Nothing was underfilled but it was pretty dark. I work at a dealership and most of the techs told me I was wasting $ but it's my first new vehicle and offered some peace of mind. They said the same when I had my 1st oil change @ 1000 miles. No regrets.

Do you have a motorcraft part number for the fluid ?

I question if a tech at a dealer would KNOW if if anything was under filled. Why I say this. As a former one we didn't drain into like a catch can that you could later measure to see how MUCH fluid came out. Why would we ever bother.

One of these is what we had . so no idea if anything was ever low.

Same experience on my FX4, PTU was underfilled from the factory. Always feels good to get new fluids in though!

There are 5 "sticky" threads in the maintenance section. I know at least one of them has it, but I would skim all of them if you are planning to DIY that maintenance.

If you haven't found it yet, then here you go. You only need 1 quart of each.

XY75W85QL PTU
XY75WQL RDU

Also, the service manual calls for the plugs to be replaced because they come with a thread sealant pre-applied. You can apply your own and reuse, but here are the part numbers if you choose to replace.

PTU fill plug: K2GZ7A010A
PTU drain plug: Has a rubber gasket, I didn't replace it.

RDU fill & drain plugs: 6C2Z4N282AA

Absolutely correct. NO shop confirms drained fluids, ever.

I'm coming up on my third (60K) RDU/PTU D&R. With only a half quart capacity, sooner is better. 🤠

I did my PTU drain & fill today at about 15k miles on my 2024 ecoboost. I didn't measure the volume that came out, but I'm guessing it was underfilled by as much as half from the factory. I used the OE Motorcraft fluid and replaced the fill plug with a new OE plug. It took about 500 mL/17 oz of fluid. I pumped an additional ~100 mL through to help flush out any break-in sludge that was still in there. Magnet had more sludge than I'm used to seeing on my Toyota 4x4 differentials, but not an insane amount.

Going to do the RDU soon too, waiting on new drain & fill plugs for that.

Thanks to all that contributed good info & part numbers on this thread!

Here's one more PTU fluid report. I changed mine at 18k miles. Drained 11-12 oz, so underfilled like others have reported. The fluid was dark and there was a significant buildup of metal shavings on the drain plug magnet. (Sorry, no pictures)

For what it's worth, most of the shavings will accumulate very early on and then you'll get barely any over the life of the vehicle unless something is going very wrong. I think it's a good idea to do these early changes though, since it lets you have a clean magnet going forward.

If you don't mind, what did dealership charge for trans / ptu / rdu fluid change?
